Flag of Togo

Togo is one of Africa's narrowest nations, stretching from the Gulf of Guinea in the south to Burkina Faso in the north. It was a German protectorate before being divided between France and Britain after World War I, with the French portion becoming independent Togo in 1960. Lomé, the capital, sits on the Atlantic coast and is known as one of West Africa's more pleasant and accessible cities.

What the flag of Togo means

The five stripes stand for Togo's five regions: green for hope and agriculture, yellow for faith that work brings prosperity. The red canton recalls the blood shed for independence, and the white star stands for life and purity. The flag was designed by the artist Paul Ahyi and adopted in 1960.

Togo's flag is designed to the golden ratio, with proportions of about 1:1.618, one of very few flags to use it. Togo was the German colony of Togoland until the First World War, after which it was divided between Britain and France. French Togoland became independent as Togo on 27 April 1960, while British Togoland joined Ghana.
