Flag of Cape Verde

Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean, located about 570 kilometres off the coast of West Africa. The islands had no indigenous population and were uninhabited until Portuguese colonisation in the 15th century. Cape Verde is known internationally for its distinctive morna music, associated with the legendary singer Cesária Évora, and has developed a stable democratic government and relatively strong economy for a small island nation.

What the flag of Cape Verde means

Cape Verde's flag, adopted in 1992, replaced a design based on the flag of the PAIGC, the independence movement it once shared with Guinea-Bissau. Blue stands for the sea and the sky, the white and red stripes for peace and for the effort of building the nation, and the ten yellow stars for the ten main islands of the archipelago.

More about the flag

Cape Verde's ten islands are Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal, Boa Vista, Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava; Santa Luzia is uninhabited. Their stars are set in a circle, which recalls the flag of Europe, and placed off-centre towards the hoist. The country became independent from Portugal in 1975, and its flag changed in 1992 when it moved to multi-party democracy.
